Letter Grade Calculator
Convert a percentage score to a letter grade and GPA equivalent. Choose the grading scale your school uses: plus/minus, standard 10-point or 7-point.
Introduction
The same percentage can earn different letters at different schools. The letter grade calculator converts your percentage score using one of the three most common US grading scales and shows the matching letter and 4.0 GPA equivalent.
How it works
Each grading scale is a list of bands. Every band has a lower limit and a letter. The calculator finds your percentage on the scale you picked and returns the letter for the band it falls in. The same score can land in a different band on a different scale. For example, 92% is an A− on the plus/minus scale, an A on the 10-point scale and a B on the 7-point scale.
The formula
Plus/minus limits start at A+ for 97, A for 93, A− for 90, and so on down to F below 60. The charts below list every limit.
How to use this calculator
- Work out your percentage score. If you only have the number of questions wrong, the Easy Grader does it in one tap.
- Pick the grading scale your school or teacher uses.
- Type your percentage into the box.
- Read the letter and GPA, and compare them with your syllabus.
Real examples
| Score | Plus / minus | 10-point | 7-point |
|---|---|---|---|
| 92% | A− (3.7) | A (4.0) | B (3.0) |
| 88% | B+ (3.3) | B (3.0) | B (3.0) |
| 84% | B (3.0) | B (3.0) | C (2.0) |
| 76% | C (2.0) | C (2.0) | D (1.0) |
| 74% | C (2.0) | C (2.0) | D (1.0) |
| 65% | D (1.0) | D (1.0) | F (0.0) |
Tips for teachers
- Announce your grading scale on the first day.
- Publish your rounding rules, such as whether 89.5% becomes 90%.
- Warn students when the school moves from one scale to another.
Tips for students
- Find out which scale your school uses before you compare grades.
- Watch the boundaries. Going from 89 to 90 moves B+ to A− on the plus/minus scale.
- Remember that colleges may recalculate your grades with their own scale.
Why schools use different scales
The 10-point scale is simple. Each letter covers ten percentage points, so it is easy to explain to families. The plus/minus scale splits each letter into smaller bands, which separates a 90 from a 96. The 7-point scale makes each letter harder to earn, and it has been used by some school districts for the same reason. No scale is the national standard, so the school decides.

Why letter grades can differ between schools
Each school, district or instructor sets its own grade boundaries. Two students with the same percentage can end up with different letters, and different GPA, just because their schools use different scales. That is why this calculator lets you pick the scale.
Common letter grade mistakes
- Assuming every school uses the 10-point scale.
- Rounding your percentage before converting it. Convert first, then round only if your teacher does.
- Treating letters as exact numbers. A B can be anything from 80 to 89 on the 10-point scale.
- Expecting an A+ to exist everywhere. Many schools stop at A.
- Turning letters straight into GPA across several courses. Use the GPA calculator and include credit hours.
Limitations of this calculator
This calculator covers three common US scales. It does not know your instructor’s own cutoffs, curves, or grading systems that are not A to F, such as UK degree classes, ECTS, or divisions used in Pakistan and India. Always confirm with your school.
Frequently asked questions
How does the calculator decide my letter?
It looks at the scale you picked and finds the highest band whose lower limit is at or below your percentage. It uses the exact number you type, with no rounding.
Which grading scale should I choose?
Use the one in your syllabus or student handbook. If you are not sure, high schools often use the 10-point scale and colleges often use plus/minus.
Is 89.5% an A or a B?
On the 10-point scale it is a B, because the calculator uses the exact number. Many teachers round 89.5 up to 90, which makes it an A. Ask your teacher what the rule is.
What is the difference between A and A+?
On the plus/minus scale, A+ starts at 97 and A starts at 93. Both are usually worth 4.0 GPA points, although a few schools give A+ more.
What percentage is an F?
An F is usually anything below 60%. On the 7-point scale it is anything below 70%.
