Final Grade Calculator

Find out what score you need on your final exam to reach the course grade you want. Enter your current grade, your target grade and the weight of the final.

Introduction

Before the final exam, part of your course grade is already locked in. Only the exam score is still unknown. The final grade calculator takes your current grade, the grade you want, and how much the final is worth, then tells you the exact score you need on the exam.

You need
94.67%
(90 − 88 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 94.67%

How it works

Your grade is made of two parts: the work you have already finished, and the final exam. The finished work counts for (100% − exam weight) of the course. That part is fixed. The calculator works out how many points the exam must add to bring the total up to your target.

The formula

Required score = (Desired − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Here w is the weight of the final exam written as a decimal. A final worth 30% means w = 0.30. Desired and Current are percentages.

How to use this calculator

  1. Check your gradebook for your current overall grade in the class.
  2. Decide the final course grade you want, for example 90 for an A.
  3. Find the weight of the final exam in your syllabus and confirm it is a percentage of the total grade.
  4. Type the three numbers into the boxes above.
  5. Read the score you need on the final under “You need”.

Tips for teachers

  • State the final exam weight clearly in the syllabus.
  • Show students how to read their current grade in the gradebook.
  • Tell students early if the final replaces a lower earlier score.

Tips for students

  • Run the numbers before you start studying, so you know your target.
  • Try several target grades to see what each one costs you.
  • Re-check your current grade after every graded item is posted.

What if my required final score is over 100%?

It means your target is out of reach with the final alone. For example, with a current grade of 84%, a final worth 30% and a target of 90%, you would need 104%. Unless your instructor offers extra credit, you cannot get there. Pick a lower target, or ask your instructor what is possible.

How to improve your grade before the exam

  • Ask your instructor about extra credit or corrections on past work.
  • Check whether late or missing work can still be turned in.
  • See whether your lowest score is dropped or replaced by the final.
  • Go to office hours or tutoring for the topics the exam covers.

Every school and teacher has different rules, so check your syllabus before you count on any of these.

Common final grade mistakes

  • Typing in a single test score instead of your overall current grade.
  • Using the wrong exam weight, or a weight that is not a share of the total grade.
  • Leaving missing assignments blank when your teacher counts them as zeros.
  • Entering 0.3 instead of 30 for the weight.
  • Rounding your current grade too early.

Limitations of this calculator

The calculator assumes your current grade is accurate, the final exam has one fixed weight, and there is no curve or exam-replacement policy. Teachers who round up, curve the exam, or drop scores will get different results. Always confirm with your instructor.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean if I need more than 100%?

It means that target grade is not reachable on the final alone. You would need extra credit, or you would have to aim for a lower grade.

What if the result is zero or negative?

You already have at least your target grade, even if you scored 0% on the final. The calculator tells you this when it happens.

Where do I find my current grade and exam weight?

Your current grade is in your online gradebook or on your last progress report. The final exam weight is listed in your course syllabus.

What if my final is a project, not an exam?

It works the same way. Enter the weight of the project and read the score you need on it.

How is this different from the weighted grade calculator?

The weighted grade calculator combines several categories into one course grade. The final grade calculator works backward from the grade you want to find the one score you still need.
